Sustainable System of Irrigated Agriculture (SSIA) An Application of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in the Philippines

Abstract:

The paper is based on interviews with Eng. Ca rlos S. Salazar, assi stant administrator and manager from NIA, and professionals from IRRI, Phil-Rice, SRI-Pilipinas, and on field visits and interviews with farmers and practitioners in the Mindanao region of the Philippines in December 2007. It draws on review of papers and reports from the web and on the authors’ discussions with Dr. Norman Uphoff, Program Lead er for SRI, Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD), Co rnell University, and with Shuichi Sato, Nippon Koei Team Leader for Decentralized Irrig ation System Improvement Project (DISIMP) in Indonesia, where SRI has been tried for over 9 seasons.
