Profiles of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Practices of Philippine Mining Firms

Abstract:

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) em barked on a project to identify examples of Filipino mining companies that are striving to conduct their traditional business activities in a socially responsible m anner. MGB has identified three major mining companies operating in the Philippines whose approaches to corporate social responsibility are examined in this case study : Philex Mining Corporation, Silangan Mindanao Exploration Company , Inc. , and APO Cement Corporation.

The succeeding case studies highlight the CSR practi ces of these m i ning firm s in seeking to ensure that the organization achieves a fit with its e nvironm ent and optim izes its resources to achieve com p etitive advantage. It begins by identif y i ng com p any policy towards corporate social responsibility . Then it identifies the key elem ents of this policy broken down into econom ic, social, environm ent, and governance aspects. This is followed by highlighting existing com p any “best practice” in CSR, the approach it has taken to achie ve its objectives, and the im pacts of those practices both to the com p any and the com m unity . The fina l section exam ines the focu s of com p any ’ s future CSR efforts.
